The external review comments returned within a month and a half, requiring one major revision and the one minor revision. The opinions are sharp and pertinent. A month was given to revise the manuscript, and it was revised for 2 months while it was COVID epidemic. The revision was submitted in the end of April. Two reviewers endorsed in mid-June. It was proofread in 1–2 weeks and online in August.

The way of review in this journal is very good. Each reviewer’ comments can be addressed directly when they came back. There was no need to wait for the return of all the reviewers’ comments. The reviewers were very responsible and all were small peers. Each reviewer had 20 comments, including suggestions on methods, writing, and experiments. The article had 12 double columns at the submission stage, and 15 pages after the revision. Generally speaking, it was a relatively good journal in neuroscience. Although it is an open access journal, it is not easy to be accepted.

Unfortunately my paper was handled by an associate editor who worked very slowly. He delayed the paper for more than three months. After the reviewers had given their review comments, this editor did not put it to the interactive review stage. We emailed him and the Frontier’s office several times to remind him, and he replied that he had not seen the email because of the automatic classification of the mailbox. Because of the 3 months delay, one of the reviewers became inactive so he had to find another reviewer. This took another 3 months. The last 2 months were mainly in the interactive review stage, and we answered the comments of the reviewers and made changes. The status is endorsed now.
