PLoS Genetics has a very special mechanism: to invite Guest Editors. That is, they can invite someone who is not on the editor list to temporarily edit a paper. At the time of the submission, we suggested to invite D Balding to be the Guest Editor (one of the best human geneticists). Based on the later correspondences, PLoS Genetics did invite DB as the Editor. DB invited three reviewers, whose comments combined were longer than my paper. After reading the comments, DB said that there were too many commentss that we were not likely to address them all, so he rejected the paper.. Some of the comments were very good. We revised the paper according to them, and I felt that the quality of the paper was improved by a great deal. We then submitted to another journal. Overall, this journal seems to be selective on the authors and would not easily send papers out for peer review.
