The difference between SCI and SCIE lies in the fact that the former appeared early, starting as a paper version (some libraries in China still collect it), and later evolved into various formats, now available on CD-ROMs; the latter appeared later, as an online version, based on the Web of Sciences on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform. There is no essential difference between the two in terms of selection for publication, and the CD-ROM version will inevitably be phased out, while the online version will inevitably become more popular, so now when people refer to SCI inclusion, they are also referring to SCIE inclusion; an SCI article is also an SCIE article
