The AIDS journal is a bit biased. The laboratory I work in has submitted two articles of pure theory to this journal; one was directly rejected by the editor, and the other was returned with minor revisions. In general, the whole process for this journal feels very difficult. Plus, the review period is super slow. The first review for this manuscript from this lab wasn’t received until 3 months after submission, which made us think that the two reviewers had conflicts of opinion. As a result, the editor found a third reviewer. However, when the reviews finally came back, the comments of the reviewers were very helpful. As a result, our manuscript with minor revisions went back for review for another month. Comparatively, another paper from this lab that’s also in the biochemical field has undergone manuscript reviews from five different journals (all with reviewer comments), and has been finally accepted by the fifth journal after minor revisions.
