Reviewed 2022-02-23 09:09:43 In 1982, with the support of the National Science Foundation in the United States, the Institute was established on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley by Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, Ishadoll Singh, and Calvin C. Moore from the Department of Mathematics at Berkeley. The Institute was founded as an independent non-profit research institution aiming to promote research in mathematics and related disciplines in the United States, with Professor Shiing-Shen Chern serving as the founding director. In 1985, the Institute relocated to the Berkeley Hills, overlooking the San Francisco Bay, adjacent to the Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory.
