Biomaterials is so crafty!!! Most of the people submit to Biomaterials is because of the fast review speed of this journal. At least the accepted articles show that the submission to acceptance takes 1–2 months. But the personal experience of my research group will tell you that the editors of Biomaterials are not always treat all manuscripts as equals. Our neighbor laboratory and I submitted the papers within a same period. Their article was processed by the editor and sent for external review within two weeks. Our article was rejected after waiting for a month. Later I knew that another junior’s manuscript was also rejected one month after submission. It is inferred from this that the editor will browse it in advance within 1–2 weeks after submission and select some high-level articles for review. The remaining articles are piled up for one month, and then the editor will "pick the next best" and then sent them for review. This leads to a long editing process for articles that got rejected! Therefore, the reference value of the submission time of published articles is very limited.

The article was submitted in September, 2019. It was with editor for 4 days and took 30 days for review. There were two reviewers who raised 14 questions. The final decision of one reviewer: Therefore, it can't be accepted at present form. The final decision of the other one: However, some of main concerns should be addressed before make any consideration. The editor finally rejected it. I answered according to the questions and supplemented the data. It was resubmitted in November 2019. It was with editor in 10 days. It took nearly 80 days for review. The result returned and major revision was required. There was one reviewer who raised 2 comments. 2020.02.22, the revision was resubmitted, and it was accepted in 4 days. It took more than 5 months in total, which was really not easy.

Biomaterials seems quite weird, not to mention the slow review process of it recently. After submission, it was “submitted to journal” for about 1 month, “with editor” for about 1.5 months (finally it was submitted for review), “under review” for 2 weeks (2 months after submission), and finally got rejected. It was directly rejected by the editorial office with a template email. Was it not sent for review at all? and no review comments?? No matter what the result is, you should give the author a proper feedback. . . At that time, we also felt very...interesting or funny or something.... After the rejection template was received, we wrote an email to politely ask for review comments (diss it), but we were mistaken as someone who urged the review, and the editor replied us in another template, "I found 5 reviewers but they did not accept the review. We have still been looking for it." After a few rounds of emails, the editor replied "Oh, sorry. We made a mistake. Your manuscript has been rejected, and the review comments have been emailed to you."......?????? I feel that the submission process has become a joke!

The efficiency of this journal is commendable. The review period is only one month – highly efficient. I felt that the editor of this journal was revered in the field. Honestly, if the status had been “with the editor,” it was very likely that the editor himself was reviewing the manuscript.

A very smooth submission. The editors of Biomaterials are very professional, much more so than the Indian editor at AM. Because my research topic on vascular stent materials is relatively niche in the field of biomaterials, and not part of the research groups of Wang Yunbing, Zheng Yufeng, Gao Changyou and other experts in vascular stents, my first submission to AM was rejected by the Indian editor. Subsequent submissions to Angew and Science Advances were also desk rejected. Finally, I submitted to Biomaterials, and the assigned editor at Biomaterials specializes in researching vascular stents. I believe my article gave him a sense of "love at first sight", especially with the high value of the enhanced CT results in the graphic abstract, as well as the bio-inspired materials and integrated surface modification strategies. I believe these points deeply impressed the assigned editor at Biomaterials. We do not know the editor well, but we feel that he appreciates our work. Although the reviewers were not familiar to us, they were indeed lenient reviewers. After revisions, the article was accepted quickly.

1. The efficiency of this journal is really worrying. It took over 6 months from submission to acceptance. As a recent graduate, I took a gamble on my own plans.
2. The most frustrating part is the difficulty in finding reviewers. I was lucky to have 3 reviewers and eventually got accepted. Some authors may have the misfortune of having additional reviewers in the second or third round, leading to rejection, which is truly unlucky.
3. Everyone in our department has submitted to this journal 5 times, and I was the first to be accepted. To be honest, it doesn't matter how good your work is, it mainly depends on whether the editor likes it. If the editor likes it, the process of submission, finding reviewers, the number of reviewers, and acceptance are all much easier.
