The first version was submitted in early October 2019, and the first review comments were received about three months later. One of the three reviewers pointed out the insufficient contribution of the article and put forward constructive revision comments; the other two reviewers also put forward some suggestions. AE was relatively nice, and gave us the opportunity for revision: Provisionally rejected-may be resubmitted as brief paper. The theory and simulation results were further improved, and after more than three months, the revised version was submitted and we waited patiently. Surprisingly, I received an email this evening: Accepted as Brief Paper! This is my first article in Automatica. I feel it is good overall, I hope I can make more meaningful contributions in the future, and I wish you all the best in your studies and everything!

At the time of submission, none of the papers at hand had been accepted. I was very anxious. I wanted to submit it to a journal not that good, but the boss insisted that I submit it here. Unexpectedly, after submission, the reviewers thought that there were bright spots and innovations in my article, but the first draft was too rubbish. I revised the format once, and carefully revised it from beginning to end and then it got provisionally accepted. Unexpectedly, it took another 6 months after provisionally accepted before the final acceptance. It took a year and a half from the first draft to the acceptance, which was still a long time. My 4 articles have been accepted in this period.

The first submission was completed in early 2017, which I submitted to TIE. It was rejected by TIE for smashing the article of Chief Editor and showing superiority in experiments bit by bit. He also hinted that I “simplify the content and don’t over-comparison”. Then I submitted the article to TCYBER. There were four reviewers, three of whom gave excellent comments. Another reviewer had a distorted worldview. The reason for rejecting me was too complicated and anti-human. In my anger, I turned to a more complicated experimental platform (replacing 3-DOF robot with multiple 6-DOF robot), developed a new learning algorithm, added machine vision, and shot a large number of experimental demos. I submitted to Automatica on March 19, 2018. After six months of the first review, it was directly accepted provisionally. Glad to submit the revised one, but it took another six months before it was accepted. However, that’s not the point. The point was that when I emailed my collaborators to say that this weird paper had finally been accepted by Automatica, or I thought the reviewer was dead. Then the chief editor was mistakenly added to the email sending column…

The review period for Automatica is insanely long. It took a total of 14 months for the review process and revisions to be completed. In the end, my manuscript was accepted for publication… but I’m not sure the wait was worth it. Personally, I do not recommend submitting to Automatica. The requirements (formatting, language, innovation level) are also strict.
