Publisher: The non-profit open access publisher based in San Francisco, United States, has released its latest financial data, revealing a revenue of $32 million in 2018, with a loss of $5.5 million. To cover this loss, it not only will deplete its savings, but also sell nearly $5 million in financial assets. This is not the first time PLOS has spent more than its revenue. The last time PLOS made a surplus was in 2015, when its bank balance had $30.6 million in savings. By 2017, PLOS's savings had decreased by nearly half, to $17 million, and further declined to $11 million in 2018. Meanwhile, despite the report being released, salaries and other staff benefits increased by $1.8 million (8%) in 2018 compared to 2017. The number of papers published decreased by 11%. At this rate of depletion, the publisher will run out of savings in a few years unless there is a significant change. 
Journals: All of PLOS journals are basically declining. Here focus on 1) PLOS Biology, the flagship journal of PLOS, a first batch Nature Index journal, but the impact factor has been continuously declining in recent years, accompanied by a slight increase in the number of publications. It should be between 6-7 next year following this trend, and it is likely to be removed from the Nature Index journal list in the near future! It is worth noting that PLOS Biology can accept articles from other journals published within six months, which is still commendable. 2) PLOS Pathogens, the impact factor is also declining year by year, and the number of publications has been decreasing in recent years, but it seems that it has limited effect, the impact factor next year will be around 5.5! The flagship journal of the American Society for Microbiology, mBio, has already surpassed PLOS Pathogens in terms of impact factor and number of publications. Based on the influence and appeal of the American Society for Microbiology, it is impossible for PLOS Pathogens to surpass mBio in the future!
