Everyone is sharing their experience after being accepted. Let me talk about some small experiences gained after being rejected. I hope to help students who are preparing for submission. 1) Before submission, focus on revising the abstract, introduction and conclusion; 2) If you don’t need color images, you don’t use them. SBB prefers grayscale images. If you really want to use color images, don’t use too many colors; 3) In the Results and Discussion sections, the content of the supplementary material cannot be quoted in large quantities, which the editor was very disgusted with; 4) SBB preferred to have clear assumptions and verify it through the content of your article. Undoubtedly it is the best journal in the field of soil science. Its historical status is difficult to be dislodged in near future. Judging from the experience of this submission, every submission after 3–4 days would be sent to the editor. The editor would read the article first, and decide whether to send it for review after two weeks. The reviewer would return opinions in about 5 weeks. The editor would read the article again and give his review comments (in most cases, the editor's comments are more professional than those of the reviewers). After the revision, the editor would sometimes send it for review, and sometimes handle it by himself (the slowest time can be reached to a month). Generally speaking, the experience of submission is that the editor is really responsible. Even if some reviewers relax the procedure slightly, the editor will not let you pass easily. The expert’s submission may be easier, but ordinary people’s submission would take about half a year from submission to final acceptance sometimes.

Judging from the number of published articles in this journal, it is declining slightly every year, although the quality of the articles is still very good. The journal’s reputation and status in soil science are also difficult to understand. From my own submission experience, it is the editor-in-chief of this journal who is the man in charge. From deciding whether to submit the article to review, to deciding whether the article needs to be revised, to deciding whether to accept it, every detail feels his touch. Even if the article is rejected, the editor-in-chief is the decision-maker after reading the article from beginning to end. Unlike some journals, the editor, not the reviewer, gives advice, and the reviewer basically does not read the article.  I wish SBB would get better than this!

The submission was made in July, and it was accepted by the end of December. It took more than 5 months, going through two major revisions, one minor revision, and two new reviewers in the second round of reviews. There were also comments from the editor-in-chief and guest editors. It must be said that the journal is very professional and worthy of its top position in soil science. It was noticed that the editor-in-chief usually sends emails on Sunday evenings, perhaps accustomed to working on editorial tasks over the weekend. I have submitted a few times before, but they were all rejected without review. Finally, one has been accepted.

Can't you figure this out? In this way, the first decision time is shortened. Journals also need to shorten the first decision time to show to others.

I submitted a special issue some time ago, the technical review did not require me to make any modifications, and it went directly to the editor. Now it is undergoing external review, hoping for good results. However, in the past few years, the articles I submitted were not special issues, and each time they required modifications after the technical review. I wonder if special issues are different.

I think SBB is a bit better than Geoderma and BFS, but they are all in the same tier. The ones ranked after are also decent. I haven't invested in a few of them, so I can't comment on those.
