I thought it would be easy. There were three reviewers in the first review, one agreed to publish after a minor revision, one requested a major revision, one rejected it directly, and the editor requested a major revision. After the major revision submitted, the first and second reviewers were satisfied, and the third reviewer required to continue the major revision. After major revision resubmitted again, the manuscripts were revised beyond recognition according to the review comments, but the third reviewer was still not satisfied. I asked the editor for help. The editor put forward a few suggestions for revise, and then it was accepted after revised submission returned. In general, editors and reviewers are responsible, which is beneficial to the development of the journal. The results were given in about 20 days for the first review, and it took three months from submission to the final acceptance.

The manuscript was submitted at two o'clock in the afternoon, and it was submitted for review at almost four o'clock, the speed was very fast. It took about half a month for review, five days for major revision, and three days for minor revision after the submission of revision. During the period, several minor revisions were made, and it was accepted in more than one month. The efficiency of the editor was high, and there were no holidays. This journal was recently included in SCI; it is optimistic about breaking through three next year and entering Q2.

Overall, the process with MDPI's second tier journals was not too difficult and went smoothly.

The reviewers selected by the journal are all quite professional, and the opinions they provide are very good. The biggest problem is that the journal editors are not very rigorous in handling revisions. Even for important revisions, they do not send them back to the reviewers but directly accept them for publication. This process is too exaggerated.

The forum is heavily flooded, the page fee is quite expensive. I submitted in March of last year and was accepted in less than two weeks. They don't even check the original sequencing data, it's too watered down.

Major revision on November 23rd (4 reviewers, received comments from 3 reviewers initially, one external expert showed interest and provided comments two days after receiving the major revision notification); one reviewer raised many professional questions, some even self-answered, another reviewer said the analysis method was unreasonable and requested new figures; language was also criticized as inadequate and needed polishing, another reviewer pointed out several minor professional issues, one suggested to simplify the discussion section, with no other issues. This was my first submission to an MDPI journal, I am not sure if all submissions have two or more external experts, or if I just happened to encounter several; overall, the external experts were quite professional, at least in my field, and raised many strong professional questions.

Returned on December 6th

Accepted on December 14th

Overall, the process was very fast, the external reviewers were experts with strong relevance, and some of their comments were very insightful.

On a side note, before graduation, some PhD students may look down on MDPI, but after graduation, it's actually quite good.

The review process was very fast, not necessarily very professional. It is a journal with a lot of non-academic content, and I only submitted to meet a deadline. If you are not in a rush to publish, I do not recommend submitting to this journal, as the publication fee is quite expensive.
